Matterhorn is the brainchild of songwriter and vocalist Tommy Sebastian Halseth, who in 2013 started to assemble various musical ideas which gradually turned into the project Matterhorn.
As time passed, the songs matured both musically and lyrically, as Tommy involved different musicians with broad backgrounds to fulfill the Matterhorn vision. This vision was to have a steady core of musicians with him, as well as letting other players freely contribute with their own talents - without dictating their additions, but rather keep their own respective signatures and adding it to the flow of the music. These contributions includes members from Norwegian bands Wobbler, Triosphere and Divided Multitude, among others. The steady core appeared in 2017, consisting of fellow Trondheim musicians Edvin Matthieson (bass, acoustic guitar) and Andreas Stunes (drums, keyboards). Now that the core was settled, the band took to recording the songs, arranging together and gradually letting the musical contributors sprinkle their musical fairy dust over the songs. This resulted in a wide musical palette. The outcome has turned into a broad canvas of light and shade - melancholy, grief and reflection - but also of hope and gratitude along with musical playfulness.
Thematically, the album’s title - “Outside” - deals with the ones left out, both mentally and in terms of being alienated from society - with the backdrop of the chaotic and superficial modern world. Musically, the album ranges over a variety of inspirations and moods, highlighting a strong melodic focus - instead of trying to play 89 notes per second (though we know some musicians do, it’s not for us). The band went for an organic sounding record, aiming for the music to breathe and to be dynamic. With the aid and oversight of producer/mixer Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, The Opium Cartel), Matterhorn’s first album “Outside” will be released through Apollon Records in November.
